Rabindranath Tagore University was established by the Act 34 of 2017 of Assam Legislative Assembly by upgrading Hojai College, Hojai, Assam to a University.

The Chancellor of the University, the Honorable Governor of Assam has constituted an Advisory Board to recommend a panel of three names for position of the First Vice Chancellor of the University, the Honorable Governor of Assam has constituted an Advisory Board to recommend a panel of three names for position of the First Vice Chancellor of the University.

The Vice Chancellor to be appointed should be:-

• A visionary with proven leadership qualities, administrative capabilities as well as teaching and research credentials.
• A distinguished academician, with minimum of ten years of experience as Professor in a University or ten years of experience in a reputed research and/or academic administrative organization with proof of having demonstrated academic leadership.
• No more than 65 years of age on 01.04.2019.
